The story of Malia Obama’s Mexican vacation reveals double standards and a noodle-spined media

Over the weekend, I got a link to a story about Malia Obama heading off to Mexico for vacation with 12 friends and 25 Secret Service agents.  The story is newsworthy because it implicates taxpayer concerns:  Malia is going to a nation that the State Department warns is dangerous, and Americans are footing the bill for the 25 federal employees who are necessary to offset that danger.  I know that these Secret Service agents are on the payroll regardless, but feeding and lodging them outside of Washington, D.C. becomes the taxpayers’ burden.  (In the same way, Obama’s little basketball jaunt with PM Cameron cost the taxpayers an extra $478,000 over the regular fixed costs in the “taking care of POTUS” budget.)
You’ll notice that I haven’t included the link to the story about Malia Obama’s trip.  That’s because, by the time I received the email with the link to the Malia vacation story, the great white-out had begun.  As I, and every other sentient web-using being had noticed, the story about Malia Obama was melting away as quickly as the wet Wicked Witch of the West.  Those of us trying to find a solid link for the story felt as if we were playing a bizarre version of whack-a-mole.  The links would pop up for a second, only to vanish again.
The big question, of course, was why?  Why is an apparently properly sourced story vanishing?  If it was false, one would expect White House push-back, with the news sources either denying the White House’s arguments or issuing apologies for their error.  A vanishing story, however, has been a first.  And now the truth has come out.  The White House told the news agencies that it’s not fair to report on the kids:
The White House has admitted to telling news agencies to pull stories on Malia Obama visiting the Mexico for spring break, Politico reports.
Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the First Lady, emailed Dylan Byers:
From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls.
There are a couple of problems, however, with the White House’s reasoning and the media’s craven collapse.  First, as I noted in my opening paragraph, it is newsworthy that the White House has opted to impose on taxpayers the very real and high costs of sending the First Daughter to a nation that’s on the State Department’s own warning list (although the region in which Melia is now traveling is not specifically named in that list).
Second, the Obamas routinely trot out the kids to score political points.  The most recent example was the way President Obama used his daughters to justify calling Sandra Fluke to sympathize with her when Rush Limbaugh suggested that spending thousands of dollars on sex aids, and then expecting others to pay for them, suggested that Fluke is not a lady, in the old-fashioned sense of the word.  Bristol Palin sums it up nicely:
You don’t know my telephone number, but I hope your staff is busy trying to find it. Ever since you called Sandra Fluke after Rush Limbaugh called her a slut, I figured I might be next.  You explained to reporters you called her because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha.  After all, you didn’t want them to think it was okay for men to treat them that way:
“One of the things I want them to do as they get older is engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on,” you said.  “I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way. And I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they’re being good citizens.”
Most political observers also thought it wasn’t a coincidence that Barack’s and Michelle’s 2011 Christmas card — the last one they’ll be sending out before the election — prominently features their two daughters.  This was a campaign photo and it made the daughters a prop.
I don’t mind that Obama is using his daughters politically.  Politicians do that all the time, and it’s no use pretending that the Obamas don’t have two daughters out there who make perfect photographic and rhetorical props.  What I do mind is that the White House gets to eat its cake and have it.  It announces to the press “We get to use the Obama girls when it’s good for us, but you don’t get to use the Obama girls when it’s bad for us.”  And the press, meekly, goes away.
Rather than collapsing spinelessly, the press, collectively, should have said, “Sorry, but this story is already out there, so you’ll have to deal with the security consequences of sending your daughter off to a dangerous country.  As for future stories, we won’t report on your daughters if you’ll stop using them to score political points.  As long as you keep them in the public eye, however, they’re fair game for honest reporting about their activities.”
I guess, though, that my dream of an upright and honest media is as much a fantasy as that melting Wicked Witch of the West.

SHOULD AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT BE INCITING RACIAL TENSIONS IN A CIVIL OFFENSE?

Obama Speaks Out on Trayvon Martin Killing

1:20 p.m. | Updated President Obama spoke in highly personal terms on Friday about how the shooting in Florida of a 17-year-old black youth named Trayvon Martin had affected him, saying that “if I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”
The comments by Mr. Obama were his first on the explosive case in which a neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, has claimed self-defense after shooting Mr. Martin several weeks ago. The case has generated outrage about the state’s so-called Stand Your Ground law.
Mr. Obama was asked about his feelings regarding the case during the announcement of his nominee for president of the World Bank in the Rose Garden on Friday morning.
The president often appears perturbed when he is asked off-topic questions at ceremonial events, but on Friday, he seemed eager to address the case, which has quickly developed into a cause célèbre around the country. He cautioned that his comments would be limited because the Justice Department was investigating. But he talked at length about his personal feelings about the case.
“I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this,” Mr. Obama said. “All of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen.”
The brief remarks were nonetheless a rare example of Mr. Obama speaking to the nation as an African-American parent and the father of two children.
“Obviously, this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through,” Mr. Obama said, his face grim. “When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids.”
President Obama spoke in the Rose Garden at the White House on Friday.Jonathan Ernst/ReutersPresident Obama spoke in the Rose Garden at the White House on Friday.
The most powerful line came at the end of his brief remarks, as he said that his “main message” was directed at the parents of Mr. Martin, who have expressed their deep grief during interviews on television over the last several days.
“You know, if I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Mr. Obama said, pausing for a moment. “I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.”
Mr. Obama sidestepped some of the most sensitive and politically charged specifics about the case — whether Mr. Zimmerman should be arrested; whether the Stand Your Ground law goes too far in protecting people who shoot others; whether the police chief in Sanford, where the shooting took place, should be fired. (The chief, Bill Lee, stepped down temporarily on Thursday, saying he had become a distraction to the investigation.)
“I’m the head of the executive branch, and the attorney general reports to me,” Mr. Obama said. “So I’ve got to be careful about my statements to make sure that we’re not impairing any investigation that’s taking place right now.”
Thousands of supporters of Mr. Martin’s parents expressed their outrage about the killing at a rally in Florida on Thursday night, adding to the growing political dimensions of the case.

The shooting took place Feb. 26, when Mr. Zimmerman, 28, pursued, confronted and fatally shot Mr. Martin, an unarmed high school student carrying only an iced tea and a bag of Skittles.
In a statement on Friday, Mitt Romney, the presumed front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, said: “What happened to Trayvon Martin is a tragedy. There needs to be a thorough investigation that reassures the public that justice is carried out with impartiality and integrity.”
Rick Santorum made some pointed comments about the killing while campaigning at a shooting range in West Monroe, La., before the Louisiana primary on Saturday.
“Well, stand your ground is not doing what this man did,” he said. “There’s a difference between stand your ground and doing what he did. It’s a horrible case. I mean it’s chilling to hear what happened, and of course  the fact that law enforcement didn’t immediately go after and prosecute this case is another chilling example of horrible decisions made by people in this process.”
Newt Gingrich, campaigning Friday in Port Fourchon, La., said the district attorney had done “the right thing” in empaneling a grand jury. But, speaking of Mr. Zimmerman, he said it was “pretty clear that this is a guy who found a hobby that’s very dangerous.”
“Having some kind of neighborhood watch is reasonable, but you had somebody who was clearly overreaching,” Mr. Gingrich said. “As I understand Florida law, what he was doing had nothing to do with the law that people are talking about.”
A History of Caution on Race
The last time the president waded into a racially charged incident, it became a political problem for him.
Asked at a news conference about the arrest of a black Harvard professor in the summer of 2009, Mr. Obama offered his opinion, saying that the white officer from Cambridge, Mass., had acted “stupidly” and starting a weeklong controversy about what he said.
“I think it’s fair to say, No. 1, any of us would be pretty angry; No. 2, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home; and, No. 3 , what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there’s a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately,’’ Mr. Obama said at the time. “That’s just a fact.’’
Mr. Obama eventually invited the professor, Henry Louis Gates Jr., and the police officer, James Crowley, to the White House to discuss the situation over some beers.
But despite that incident, the president has been careful not to wade into racial politics. As the nation’s first African-American president, he is sometimes criticized by black leaders who say he is not doing enough to deal with problems in that community.
Asked about the issue in a news conference in his first few months in office, Mr. Obama defended his approach as one that “will lift all boats” by working to “level the playing field and ensure bottom-up economic growth.”
“I’m confident that that will help the African-American community live out the American dream at the same time that it’s helping communities all across the country,” Mr. Obama said in April of 2009.

After driving the U.S. more deeply into debt than any other President,

Want to know where Obama’s 13 year-old daughter is right now with 12 friends?

On “spring break” in Oaxaca Mexico, on your dime.

She took two jets and 25 secret service men.

A thirteen year-old?

Why haven’t you heard about it?

The Obama Administration has had the Secret Service scouring the web ordering that any website mentioning this be taken down because letting the travel plans out could endanger the president’s daughter’s security.

Nonsense, the “royal couple” just want to hide the way they are ripping off the U. S. taxpayer

WE ARE THE # 1 STUPID COUNTRY

It's easy to dismiss individual programs that
benefit non-citizens until they're put together

of research to put together all of this data.
Often these programs are buried within other

KEYSTONE PIPELINE SYSTEM: by Arnold Nass

                                       DEFINITIONS & INTERPRETATIONS

KEYSTONE PIPELINE SYSTEM: IT CONSISTS OF THE OPERATIONAL “KEYSTONE PIPELINE” (PHASE 1) – MAIN LINE – 30” AND “KEYSTONE – CUSHING EXTENSION” (PHASE 2) – 34” AND TWO PROPOSED KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE EXPANSION SEGMENTS (PHASE 3 – CUSHING TO GULF COAST) AND (PHASE 4 – HARDISTY, ALBERTA, CANADA TO STEELE CITY, NEBRASKA – 34” WHERE IT WILL CONNECT TO PHASE 2 AND 3).

KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE PROJECT:  ON SEPTEMBER 19, 2008, THE APPLICANT, TransCanada Keystone Pipeline, LP. (TransCanada) FILED AN APPLICATION FOR A PRESIDENTIAL PERMIT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION ------OF PIPELINE FACILITIES AT THE BORDER OF THE U.S. AND CANADA FOR THE TRANSPORT OF CRUDE OIL ACROSS THE U.S./CANADA INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY.  AND, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE (DOS) PREPARED A FINAL IMPACT STATEMENT (FINAL EIS) FOR THE PROPOSED KEYSTONE XL PROJECT.

TransCanada also requested authorization to construct and operate border crossing facilities at the U.S./Canadian border in Phillips County, Montana, near Morgan, in connection with the the proposed PROJECT that is designed to transport CRUDE OIL produced from oil sands in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) AND OTHER SOURCES to a proposed oil storage facility in Cushing, Oklahoma, and to DELIVERY POINTS NEAR NEDERLAND AND MOORE JUNCTION, TEXAS.

SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT (SDEIS) CRUDE OIL TRANSPORTED BY THE PROPOSED PROJECT WOULD, FOR THE MOST PART, ORIGINATE WITHIN THE ALBERTA (OIL SANDS) BITUMEN AND THE TYPES OF CRUDE OIL PRODUCED THROUGH PROCESSING OR CONVERTING IT ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:

RAW BITUMEN IS SOLID UNDER AMBIENT  (ATMOSPHERIC) CONDITIONS
RAW BITUMEN:  IT IS A SOLID UNDER A                     AND THAT MUST BE DILUTED OR CONVERTED TO TRANSPORT VIA PIPELINE.   IT’S OIL GRAVITIES RANGE FROM 8 TO 12% API.

UPGRADED BITUMEN – SYNCRUDE (SCO): THIS IS PRODUCED FROM BITUMEN VIA A REFINERY CONVERSION THAT TURNS HEAVY HYDROCARBONS INTO LIGHTER HYDROCARBONS. SCO CAN BE SOUR, BUT IT IS USUALLY A LIGHT, SWEET CRUDE WITHOUT HEAVY FRACTIONS.

DILUTED BITUMEN (DILBIT): THIS IS BITUMEN MIXED WITH A DILUTENT, USUALLY A NATURAL GAS LIQUID SUCH AS CONDENSATE AND DILBIT FEEDSTOCK PROCESSING REQUIRES MORE HEAVY OIL CONVERSION CAPACITY THAN MOST CRUDE OILS AND HAS HIGH LEVELS OF SULFUR AND AROMATICS.

SYNTHETIC BITUMEN (SYNBIT):  IT IS A COMBINATION OF BITUMEN AND (SCO).THE PROPERTIES OF (SYNBIT) BLENDS VARY GREATLY.

DILUTED SYNTHETIC BITUMEN (DILSYNBIT): IT IS A COMBINATION OF BITUMEN AND HEAVY CONVENTIONAL CRUDES BLENDED WITH CONDENSATE AND (SCO) PRODUCING A PRODUCT MORE SIMILAR TO CONVENTIONAL CRUDE OIL.

ACCORDING TO KEYSTONE: THE TYPES OF WCSB CRUDE OIL THAT WOULD BE TRANSPORTED BY THE PROPOSED PROJECT WOULD PRIMARILY CONSIST OF SCO AND DILBIT. THE UPGRADING PROCESS FOR SCO AND THE ADDITION OF DILUENT IN DILBIT WOULD OCCUR BEFORE THE OIL WOULD BE DELIVERED TO THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE AT HARDISTY, ALBERTA.

PRECISE COMPOSITION: SCO AND DILBIT THAT WILL VARY BY SHIPPER AND IS CONSIDERED PROPRIETARY INFORMATION. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH CONVERSION IS DONE BY EACH INDIVIUDAL SHIPPER. AND ONCE SAID COMPOSITION REACHES IT’S DESTINATION NEAR THE GULF COAST OF TEXAS, TransCanada IS NO LONGER INVOLVED.

Note: Isn’t this enough to convince the railroad commission that this is a private transaction not worthy of eminent domain. The shipper has the sco and dilbit put in at Hardisty and controls its destination upon receipt at the Gulf Coast. We need not be concerned with what he does with it thereafter.

ABSTRACT:

Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Calgary.

The oil sands deposits in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) comprise of at least 85% of the total immobile bitumen in place in the world. The major deposits are Athabasca, in north central Alberta; Cold Lake, near the east border of Alberta, almost due east of Athabasca and Peace River, near the northwest corner of Alberta. They were derived from light oils in the southern Alberta and migrated north many years ago.

In the early 1970s I was Exploration Manager for Vanderbilt Resources of Dallas. We had a office and geologist in Calgary, Alberta and drilled a few wells in southern Alberta before the government of Canada asked all of us Americans to go home.

The (WCSB) is a vast very early sedimentary basin underlying 540,000 sq mi of Western Canada including southwestern Manitoba, southern Saskatchewan, Alberta, northeastern British Columbia and the southwest corner of the Northwest Territories. It extends the way from the Canadian Shield, near the northeast corner of North Dakota to the west coast of Canada, the east coast of Alaska and north to the Beaufort Sea. It varies in depth from zero on the east to 19,500 ft on the west.
The Canadian Shield is the top of the mountains on which most of the rest of Canada sits and it is rich in many hard minerals.

The Williston Basin is a much younger basin partly within the (WCSB) and covers a good bit of Montana, North and South Dakotas and a small part of southern Saskatchewan in Canada.

Jack Hinckley, President of Vanderbilt Resources and I looked this area over with the idea of opening an office in Williston, North Dakota but didn’t think it would be economical. That was before we knew anything about horizontal drilling

ALASKA NORTH SLOPE (ANS)

The artificial inhibition of U. S. oil production has severe consequences for jobs and economic growth. Congress should immediately act to free the Alaskan oil trade and repeal the prohibition on oil exports. An analysis reveals that the export ban has been an extremely costly proposition. According to Arlon Tussing, then the chief economist for the Senate Interior Committee, the expost ban was adopted by Congress largely out of spite.

Alaskan crude oil is of better quality than most California crudes, but it is still heavier than most of the foreign crude oils it should but cannot replace. However, it can replace the heavy crude oil we purchase from Venezuela and Canada.
